Dr. Berrin Tansel is a professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department. She has been on the faculty at Florida International University since 1990. Before joining FIU, Dr. Tansel was a project manager at Massachusetts Water Resources Authority on the Boston Harbor clean up project. She has also worked at the Center for Environmental Management at Tufts University on preparation of several research reports to US Congress. She has been a consultant for PEER Consultants, Soap and Detergent Association, SCS Engineers, City of Pompano Beach, and ERM-South. Dr. Tansel teaches graduate and undergraduate courses covering fundamental theory, laboratory experimentation, and design aspects of environmental engineering with particular emphasis in water treatment and waste management. She has authored over 200 research papers, reports, and professional practice publications.
Dr. Tansel has been the recipient of several prestigious awards including the 2009 Edmund Freidman Professional Achievement Award from American Society of Civil Engineers, U.S. Army Freedom Team Salute Commendation from U.S. Army-Manpower and Reserve Affairs, 2007 Engineer of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers Miami-Dade Branch, Kika E. de la Garza Fellowship from U.S. Department of Agriculture, Faculty Research Fellowship from Kennedy Space Center (2004 and 2005), Dean’s Award for Outstanding Service (2007), ASCE Student Chapter Award (2006), Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching (2006), Kauffman Professor of Entrepreneurship (2006), State University System of Florida Teaching Incentive Award (1997 and 1994), Faculty Award for Excellence in Service (1994), Faculty Award for Excellence in Research (1993).
Dr. Tansel is an elected Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and elected Diplomate of American Academy of Water Resources Engineers. She is a member of Water Environment Federation, Environmental and Water Resources Institute of ASCE, and Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors. Dr. Tansel is the editor in chief Journal of Environmental Challenges and co-editor in chief Journal of Environmental Management and serves on the editorial boards of American Society of Civil Engineers Journal of Natural Hazards Review, Journal of Bioremediation & Biodegradation, Journal of Petroleum & Environmental Biotechnology, and Journal of Civil & Environmental Engineering.
